Stew Friedman: Pioneering LeadershipWork Life Integration at Wharton

Stewart Friedman is a renowned organizational psychologist at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He joined Wharton's faculty in 1984 and since then has played multiple roles, including serving as an emeritus professor from 2019 onwards. Prior to his academic career, he worked for five years in mental health services, following which he earned a PhD from the University of Michigan.

Friedman pioneered several initiatives at Wharton, notably launching the Wharton Leadership Program now known as the McNulty Leadership Program in 1991 where he introduced core leadership courses such as Learning Teams and Leadership Fellows. His vision further exted to founding Wharton’s P3: Purpose, Passion, Principlesa co-curricular experience driven collaboratively by students, faculty, and administrators.

He established the WorkLife Integration Project at Wharton in 1991, reflecting his commitment to exploring dynamic solutions for integrating work and personal life. Friedman has been recognized globally through Thinkers50, a biennial ranking of management thinkers, where he was honored with its Distinguished Achievement Award as the world's #1 expert in talent management in 2015 and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2023.

He was also listed among HR Magazine’s influential thought leaders, recognized by Working Mother magazine for being one of America's most impactful men who improved working parents' lives, and received the Work-Life Legacy Award from Families Work Institute.

Friedman transitioned to Ford Motor Company on leave from Wharton in 2019 as their senior executive for leadership development. In collaboration with the CEO, he initiated corporate-wide initiatives med at transforming the company's culture, which were participated by over 2500 managers annually. The Leadership Development Center led by him at Ford was acknowledged as a global benchmark by an indepent research group ICEDR.

Friedman's works include bestsellers Total Leadership: Be a Better Leader, Have a Richer Life and Leading the Life You Want: Skills for Integrating Work and Life which have been widely cited including among Harvard Business Review’s “Ideas that Shaped Management.” His third book Parents Who Lead: The Leadership Approach You Need to Parent with Purpose, Fuel Your Career, and Create a Richer Life was published in 2020.

In collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School Press, he released Baby Bust, 10th Anniversary Edition: New Choices for Men and Women in Work and Family in July 2024.

Stew Friedman's academic expertise spans areas such as leadership development and work-life integration dynamics, as evidenced by his extensive publications including a landmark study on two generations of Wharton students' experiences, Baby Bust: New Choices for Men and Women in Work and Family.

Stew Friedman is an active member of various professional boards and acts as an advisor to several organizations, including the U.S. Department of Labor, State Department, United Nations, and White House administrations.
